Hole in the Wall

There really is a restaurant named Hole In the Wall, but it is in Bath, England.  And it’s a winner, if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

San Diego has many worthy Holes in the Wall that are not so bluntly named and which are a bit closer.  Ready for excellent Thai food in an unlikely setting?  Try LANNA, The Art of Thai Cuisine, in a small strip center on Mission Bay Drive just South of the intersection with Balboa Avenue.

Tables are spaced apart so it’s quiet enough for dinner table conversation, and the service is serene.  Bird’s Nest and the pu pu platter are artistically presented, with exotic & delicious flavors.  The Tom Yum soups will warm the cockles of your heart when the temperature plummets below 60 degrees.

Lanna is a good choice for gluten-free dining — even the spring roll wrappers are made with rice flour.  Ask your waitress to identify the few items that involve wheat, so you can avoid them.

Sushi and Sake in PB

Enjoyed a fun night out last night with friends in North Pacific Beach (a.k.a PB), to celebrate a special someone’s birthday. Yes, she works with us here at Willis Allen and as a matter of fact, the majority of people there last night do as well. The birthday girl chose the restaurant, Wasabi Sushi, and I have to say it was a great choice! I had a Crunchy roll and the house salad, both were scrumptious. I love any roll that includes tempura and eel sauce.  Most everyone ordered salad and a roll, a few drank sake, and there wasn’t one complaint at the end of the night. Well, except for the fact that we were all completely stuffed!

Then it was back to the birthday girl’s house for brownies, cupcakes and milk to top it all off. Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE sugar, which would explain my lack of control when it came to the brownies and milk. I was in heaven but I’m not sure my stomach felt the same.

All in all, it was a great time with friends, delicious food, interesting conversation and lots of laughter.
