Women’s History Month

As Women’s History Month draws to a close, I’m reminded of one of San Diego’s proudest possessions; one of the only Women’s History Museums in the ENTIRE country! Located on 24th and Broadway in the heart of the beautiful and culturally diverse neighborhood of Golden Hill, its unassuming entrance rarely draws a second glance by passersby. However, upon entering the humble, one room space, visitors are invited to explore interactive computers, view vintage garments worn by suffragists in the early 20th century, and receive education by an amazing and knowledgeable staff. On my first visit to the museum I watched a documentary on the original “Fly Girls”; women who flew aircraft in World War II, led by the infamous Jackie Cochran–the first woman to break the sound barrier. The museum relies on donations by its visitors and patrons, and its presence in the San Diego community is invaluable. Not only does it reflect the contributions of women in the distant past, but also highlights women who are shaping every aspect of our society both locally, and in the world at large. If you’re looking for a Saturday afternoon activity, the SDWHM offers a great place to take our children or significant other to learn about and honor the important ladies in your life!

Culture and Cocktails

The most recent wave of beautiful weather has rekindled my affinity for San Diego, and prompted me to explore more of the city’s small town charm, and big city culture. One of my absolute favorite events that San Diego has to offer is Culture and Cocktails, which takes place the third Thursday of every month at the San Diego Museum of Art. Each month as the excitement for my favorite night builds, I get my most comfortable pair of pumps ready for a night of music, art, and exotic cocktails! Next month’s exhibit will feature works from 18th century artist Thomas Gainsborough, and focus on the artistic connections between art, fashion, and the modern woman. This exhibit is particularly exciting as it will also feature some haute couture provided by Westfield UTC.  For 15 dollars you can listen to live music, sip cocktails, and peruse amazing works of art from classical pieces to modern masterpieces. So, forego your Thursday night routine on February 17th, and bask in the culture that San Diego has to offer in a night of refinement and fun!

Hole in the Wall

There really is a restaurant named Hole In the Wall, but it is in Bath, England.  And it’s a winner, if you’re ever in the neighborhood.

San Diego has many worthy Holes in the Wall that are not so bluntly named and which are a bit closer.  Ready for excellent Thai food in an unlikely setting?  Try LANNA, The Art of Thai Cuisine, in a small strip center on Mission Bay Drive just South of the intersection with Balboa Avenue.

Tables are spaced apart so it’s quiet enough for dinner table conversation, and the service is serene.  Bird’s Nest and the pu pu platter are artistically presented, with exotic & delicious flavors.  The Tom Yum soups will warm the cockles of your heart when the temperature plummets below 60 degrees.

Lanna is a good choice for gluten-free dining — even the spring roll wrappers are made with rice flour.  Ask your waitress to identify the few items that involve wheat, so you can avoid them.
