As Women’s History Month draws to a close, I’m reminded of one of San Diego’s proudest possessions; one of the only Women’s History Museums in the ENTIRE country! Located on 24th and Broadway in the heart of the beautiful and culturally diverse neighborhood of Golden Hill, its unassuming entrance rarely draws a second glance by passersby. However, upon entering the humble, one room space, visitors are invited to explore interactive computers, view vintage garments worn by suffragists in the early 20th century, and receive education by an amazing and knowledgeable staff. On my first visit to the museum I watched a documentary on the original “Fly Girls”; women who flew aircraft in World War II, led by the infamous Jackie Cochran–the first woman to break the sound barrier. The museum relies on donations by its visitors and patrons, and its presence in the San Diego community is invaluable. Not only does it reflect the contributions of women in the distant past, but also highlights women who are shaping every aspect of our society both locally, and in the world at large. If you’re looking for a Saturday afternoon activity, the SDWHM offers a great place to take our children or significant other to learn about and honor the important ladies in your life!
